Custom Car Hire in Ireland - Driving Guide
Discover Ireland by car
Keep Left - Belt Up - Think Kilometres
In Ireland you must drive on the left-hand side of the road - and that includes rental cars! Overtake on the right when permitted. Vehicles are right-hand drive and all distances, speed limits and speedometers are in kilometres.
Seat belts are compulsory for ALL passengers. Using hand-held phones whilst driving is against the law; use a hands-free device or find a safe spot to pull over to use a mobile phone.
Children under 12 years of age must not sit in the front seat - except for infants/children in a baby or booster seat.
The general speed limit on motorways is 120kmh, open roads 100kmh and in towns 50kmh. Be sure to keep an eye on road signs advising of the speed limit.
Seeing Ireland by car is advisable. Roads in Ireland tend to be narrow, bumpy and winding! While the major motorways are of good quality, the 'real' Ireland is one of twisting country lanes. Driving on these lanes can be a pleasure with scenic treasures around every corner, but do not expect to get to your destination in record time! You could very well find yourself stuck behind a herd of cows or sheep or a slow moving tractor, but your best option is to adopt the Irish 'sure there's plenty of time' attitude.
Drinking & Driving
DON'T - There are severe penalties including imprisonment for driving with a Blood / Alcohol level exceeding 80mg
Before you set off on your journey it is advisable to check your route. Some of the motorways are toll roads. Check the toll fees before you leave and be sure you have either your credit card or some cash to pay the tolls. Toll fees start from around €1.80
Service stations are generally open from 0730 - 2000 however in larger towns you will find some open 24/7. Most are self-service. Be sure to double check which type of fuel the vehicle takes. If you do make a mistake do not start the engine as this will cause severe damage to the vehicle which you will be liable for. Instead, inform service station staff who can assist in arranging for the tank to be drained and refilled with the correct fuel.
Speed cameras are in operation throughout Ireland and Northern Ireland. Any speeding fine will be charged to your credit card by the rental company when they are advised by the authorities. This can be several weeks after your hire. Again, there are severe penalties for driving with a Blood / Alcohol level exceeding 80mg - don't drink and drive!
