Cheap Car Hire Bulgaria
Bulgaria, situated to the east of the Balkan Peninsula, between Romania in the north, and Greece in the south, is, perhaps, best known for its Black Sea beach resorts, but elsewhere is a picturesque, mountainous country, with a feast on natural, and man-made, attractions. Bulgaria boasts, for example, no less than nine UNESCO World Heritage sites – seven cultural, and two natural – including Rila Monastery, originally founded in the 10th century, and “The Madara Horseman”, located in the archaeological reserve of Madara, to the north-east of the country.
The capital city of Bulgaria, Sofia, is one of the oldest capital cities in Europe – originally established during the 8th century BC – but is, nevertheless, a vibrant and eclectic mix of the ancient, and the more modern. The oldest building in Sofia, the “Rotunda Sveti Georgi”, is a popular attraction, and there are many others, including the churches of St. Sofia and St. Petka Samardjiiska.
Elsewhere, the former, medieval, capital of Veliko Tarnovo is built on a number of hills, or elevations, including the Tsarevets Elevation, home to the so-called “Palace of the Bulgarian Kings”, and the restored “Baldwin Tower”, originally dating from the 13th century.
Sofia and Veliko Tarnovo are just two of the possible destinations served by the excellent national highway, which extends, east to west, across Bulgaria, as far as Varna, and other destinations, on the Black Sea coast. The infrastructure is such that those renting holiday apartments in Bulgaria, along this route, will find that many of the popular attractions, and locations, are highly accessible.
Driving in Bulgaria
Roads, in general, in Bulgaria, have been greatly improved, in anticipation of European Union membership, in 2007, although improvements may not have reached some minor, rural routes, so be prepared for some fairly moderate conditions, “off the beaten track”.
You can drive in Bulgaria on a full UK driving licence, although to avoid any complications, be sure to read the Terms & Conditions of your quotation, and bear in mind, too, that most care hire companies will require sight of, at least, a copy of your passport.
National speed limits, for car drivers, and motorcyclists, are approximately 75 mph (120 kmph), 55 mph (90 kmph) and 30 mph (50 kmph) on motorways, on rural roads, and in built-up areas, respectively. In case of breakdown, accident, or emergency, a nationwide roadside assistance service, operating from Sofia, is available.
